How do we perceive architecture as a shelter, protection, as something durable, fixed, safe – something that we feel in the times of earthquakes, bombing and building terrorism, somewhere we hide?

The photograph with which I will begin to write about the ‘Hotel Balkan’ cycle of photographs by Jane Štravs questions architecture critically, recording a scene in which a building in the background is being demolished as if it is made of Lego cubes and challenges the complexity of identity which we build through architecture. When architecture is demolished, its identity moves into people: people live on even after catastrophes. The state of shock is a matter of the past – a state of indifference and hopelessness has arrived.
